Description
The memorial to German First World War internees is located in New Southgate Cemetery. It features a low stone screen wall topped with a shallow pediment, resting on a simple two-stepped base. The front of the memorial displays a black metal plaque with raised lettering that lists the names of 51 deceased individuals along with their dates of death. Inscribed on the upper step of the base is the phrase: HIER RUHEN IN GOTT DIE GENANNTEN/ 51 DEUTSCHEN MAENNER DIE WAEHREND/ DES WELTKRIEGES IN ZIVILGE/ FANGENSCHAFT GESTORBEN SIND, which translates to "HERE REST IN GOD THESE 51 GERMAN MEN WHO DIED DURING THE WORLD WAR IN CIVILIAN IMPRISONMENT."
