Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Dagenham has medieval origins and was partly rebuilt in 1800. The nave and western tower are notable examples of Strawberry Hill Gothic architecture, designed by William Mason, who signed and dated the work over the door. The church is constructed of rubble with brick dressings. The three-stage tower is made of stock brick and features angle piers, pointed belfry windows with stock brick rustications, and an oval porch set in a pointed recess with quadrupled pillars. The tower has shaped battlements that reflect a Jacobean style. The chancel dates from the 13th century, while the north aisle is from the late 15th century and contains a fine monument with life-size statues of Sir Richard Alibon and his wife, dated 1688. Inside the nave, there are no old fittings except for an early 19th-century west gallery. Additionally, there is a monument with brasses dedicated to Sir Thomas Urswycke of Marks Hall.
