Description
This is a well-proportioned terrace of houses located on the east side of Chester Square in Westminster. The terrace comprises numbers 77 to 80, 80a, and an attached mews arch. The houses were planned in 1828 and construction began around 1835. The end house is slightly forward of the main block, with paired pilasters rising through the first and second floors. The buildings are three storeys tall, with an attic and a mansard roof (except for number 79). Each house is two windows wide, except for number 77, which has three bays. The ground floor has channelling, and the windows and doorways are framed by square heads. Number 79 features a projecting porch. The houses have panelled doors. First-floor windows on the centre and end houses are set within segmental arched reveals. Cast iron balconies with anthemion designs provide access from the first-floor windows. These windows are sash windows with glazing bars, and the first floor has French windows. A cornice runs above the second floor, with a smaller cornice above the third. Cast iron area railings with spearheads are present. The left return is also noteworthy, featuring a stucco, segmental-headed mews arch. A General London Council plaque on number 77 commemorates the presence of the secretariat of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945.
