Description

The gate piers at the rear entrance to Tothill House are part of a housing estate that was originally a lodge, now functioning as a shop. Built between 1928 and 1930, the design was overseen by consultant Sir Edwin Lutyens as part of the Westminster Housing Scheme for the Grosvenor Estate. The structure is made of Portland stone and grey brick, topped with a slate roof, and showcases a Neo-Georgian style.

It is a single-storey pavilion featuring a tripartite front with a central glazing bar sash window flanked by fixed side lights. The entrance includes glazed and panelled doors set in stone architraves, with similar sash windows on the returns. The building is accentuated by deeply channelled piers and quoin piers, and has a cornice and parapet below the eaves of a pyramidal roof, which is topped with a crowning finial. The gate piers, made of ashlar and topped with ball finials, are positioned adjacent to the structure, with one pier on the left side abutting the end of the long courtyard and range of Tothill House.
