Description
Rogers House is a tenement courtyard block of flats constructed between 1928 and 1930 as part of the Westminster Housing Scheme for the Grosvenor Estate, with Sir Edwin Lutyens acting as a consultant. The building is constructed of grey brick and white rendered chequerboard external elevations, with grey brick and rendered access galleries to the courtyard elevations, and features stone dressings. It has a concealed roof. The architecture follows a stripped Georgian style, with decorative detail concentrated on the entrance bay.
The building presents a symmetrical facade to Page Street, with long courtyard flank ranges, the eastern range extending through to Vincent Street. It is six stories high to Page Street and to the returns, with five stories to the Vincent Street extension, enclosing a deep rectangular courtyard. The Page Street front has a broad central recess that is blind except for central stair lights, flanked by shallow wings each four windows wide, but leaving one blind bay as a rendered panel in the chequerboard pattern. A central channelled pier entrance, leading to the stairs, is set within a built-out ashlar screen wall, featuring an archivolt arch under an open pediment and a stepped parapet above; four carved stone escutcheon panels are positioned above. The windows are flush framed, with glazing bar sashes set within the chequerboard pattern. Parapet copings finish off the facades. The flank ranges and the four-window end to Vincent Street are similar in design. The building represents an imaginative interpretation by Lutyens of a standard London County Council housing block. Note the associated lodge at No. 12 Vincent Street.
