Description
Nos. 2-7 Chester Street is a row of houses built around 1825. The buildings are constructed of brick with channelled stucco on the ground floor, except for Nos. 2 and 3. Nos. 4, 5, and 6 have slate mansard roofs, while the roofs of the other houses are not visible. The row consists of four storeys, with No. 3 having five storeys. Each house is two windows wide, except for No. 3, which has three windows. The ground floor features arched entrances for Nos. 2 and 3, with No. 2 set in a single-storey bay to the right. There are two first-floor balconies, except for No. 3. The windows are square with gauged heads, some having glazing bars, and there are French windows on the first floor for Nos. 4 to 7. The houses have parapets and iron area railings, with steps leading to the entrances.
Inside No. 7, there is a stairwell adorned with two wall paintings created with oil and gouache on paper, fixed to plaster. These paintings extend from the ground to the first floor, depicting the City of London from the Tower to St Paul's as seen from the south end of Borough High Street on the lower flight, and the northern suburbs on the upper flight. The paintings, which represent London at the time the Chester Street houses were constructed, are dated 1951 and signed with a monogram of a Greek letter phi and a Roman C, likely that of Philip Connard RA (1875-1958).
