Description

This is a row of large terraced houses located at numbers 53 to 74, Eccleston Square, SW1. The properties date from the mid-19th century and were built as part of the layout of Eccleston Square, which was designed from 1835. Numbers 60 and 61 were later rebuilt with a revised design.

The houses are constructed of stucco, with roofs that are not visible. Most have two windows across the front, although numbers 55 to 62 have three. They extend over five storeys. The end pairs feature rusticated quoins, and each is distinguished by a projecting Doric porch. Balustraded balconies are found on the first floor. The windows are square-headed with architraves, and are primarily sash windows with glazing bars. Some first-floor windows are French casements. The first-floor windows on the projecting houses, and those on numbers 55 to 58, are within pediments. Second-floor windows have cornices. The building has a modillion cornice and cast iron area railings in a spearhead pattern. The row of houses forms an integral part of Eccleston Square’s planned layout.
