Description

The British Airways Terminal, located on Buckingham Palace Road in the City of Westminster, is a Grade II listed building designed in 1939 by A. Lakeman. This air terminal features a streamlined "moderne" style with a symmetrical facade. The central tower is prominent, flanked by wings that curve forward to create a concave forecourt, which is covered by an overhanging canopy that connects the end pavilions. The building stands five storeys tall and is nine bays wide. The tower consists of ten stages, with a unifying vertical window at the front and a clock positioned above it. The end pavilions also have vertical strip windows with deep fluted jambs, while the quadrant wings feature horizontal strip windows. The window frames are made of metal and incorporate horizontal pattern glazing bars. The front canopy has a stone fascia and is supported at the center by a pair of piers, which are topped with a stylized sculpture depicting winged male and female figures.
