Description
The Arnrid Johnston Obelisk is a sculpture from around 1930, designed and carved by Arnrid Johnston. It is made of Portland stone and stands on a platform constructed of stock brick.
The obelisk has a circular base and features a three-sided plinth. It is truncated and flat-headed, with relief carvings on its three faces. The obelisk is set on a stepped, two-tier platform with a chamfered plinth. Each of the three carved sections depicts scenes of children playing. The north-west face shows a boy carrying a toy sailing boat with a dog at his feet, while the southern face features a pair of girls hoop rolling. The north-east face depicts two girls on rocking horses. Beneath this face, there is a weathered inscription on the plinth, which is now only partially legible, and appears to commemorate the granting of the land for Walden House to the City of Westminster by the Grosvenor Estate. There is also an inscription at the top of the obelisk, but it is mostly illegible. At the foot of the plinth, each of the three corners has stylised animal figures carved in the round.
