Description

This is a row of houses located on Chester Square, dating from the early to mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco with slate mansard roofs. They are three storeys high, with attic mansards to numbers 42 and 45a, and a full attic to the remainder. Numbers 43, 45, and 45b also feature additional attic mansards. The houses are divided by prominent, giant paired pilasters topped with unusual free "Ionic" capitals. The ground floor is treated with channelling. Projecting porches are supported by square piers and cushion capitals. A continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor. The windows are sash windows, mostly retaining their original glazing bars, while the first floor has French casements. A dentil cornice sits above the second floor. The attic is distinguished by incised pilasters separating the houses. The front of the properties is further defined by cast iron area railings.
