Description

196 Queen's Gate is a grand terraced house dating to 1875, designed by R. Norman Shaw in the Queen Anne style. The house is constructed of fine red brick, with some carved detailing. It has an asymmetrical composition, five storeys, an attic, and a basement. The facade is arranged with four main bays, diminishing to three above the third floor. The entrance is on the left side, positioned beneath two arches, one of which contains the main doorway and an elaborate timber door. A first-floor balcony, supported by brackets, is situated to the right; it features blind arches beneath and two timber oriels. The windows are mostly square-headed, with timber mullions and transoms, some incorporating a distinctive inset Ipswich motif and leaded lights. Cornices delineate the floors, and a central, scroll-shaped gable tops the attic. Elaborate pilaster treatment and carved brickwork incorporate Renaissance motifs. The interior remains uninspected. The building is noted for its "sweetness and light."
