Description
This is a grand terrace of houses dating to around 1840, likely designed by William King and William Kingdom. The terrace, located on the southwest side of Westbourne Terrace, extends from numbers 70 to 106 (even), and includes numbers 1 to 3 Chilworth Street on the northeast side. The buildings are constructed of stucco, with slate mansard roofs. They are four storeys in height, with a full attic storey to the central houses and a later attic with 20th-century windows to numbers 70–72. Each house is two windows wide. The central seven houses and the end pairs project slightly, accentuated by rusticated quoins. The ground floor is channelled. Projecting Greek Doric porches are present, with a colonnade to the ground floor of the central pair showcasing a panelled and studded front door. A continuous bombé balcony runs along the first floor. The first-floor windows are pedimented and flanked by fluted Corinthian columns, while the second-floor windows have cornices. All windows are architraved above ground floor and are mainly sashes with plate glass, although first-floor windows are French casements. A guilloche band sits above the second floor. A rich dentil cornice runs above the third floor; this was removed or simplified on numbers 70, 72, 86, 88, and 74, 76, and 78 respectively, but remains on the others. A subsidiary cornice defines the attic to the central houses. Cast iron area railings are present. The side returns feature three-storey semicircular bow windows. The terrace forms an integral part of a larger architectural scheme within Westbourne Terrace.
