Description
This is a terrace of twenty-one houses, numbered 1 to 21, located on the south-east side of Norfolk Square, London. The terrace likely dates to the 1840s. It is constructed of brick, with a stucco finish on the front elevation, and the ground floor is channelled to give the impression of rusticated masonry. The roof is concealed behind a parapet. The houses are arranged over four storeys and a basement, with each house originally consisting of two bays.
The six bays to the south project slightly and incorporate attics, and this arrangement likely reflects an original intention for a symmetrical terrace design that was later interrupted by the development of taller terraces to the north. Channelled pilasters define the projecting bays, and the entrances are framed by pilasters. The windows are largely tripartite sashes, set within keyed, vermiculated surrounds. An iron balcony provides a feature to the first floor. The upper floors have sashes; some with casements, all within architraves, with pediments supported on consoles. The six outer bays have segmental pediments. A sill band runs across the second floor. The third-floor windows are set within eared architraves. A cornice runs along the top of the building, featuring modillion details. The attics have windows and a coping detail to the projecting bays. Iron basement railings flank the steps leading to the entrances.
