Description
The railings and balustrades surrounding the fountains in Kensington Gardens date from the mid-19th century and are part of a formal water garden. They feature Portland stone kerbs and balustrades, along with cast iron railings. The area is rectangular, containing four pools and a central fountain, all enclosed by the cast iron railings. There are entrances to the east and west, each flanked by Portland stone pedestals topped with urns. The balustrading on the south side projects forward to support a shell fountain held up by figures of mermaids. On the east side, there is a monument to Edward Jenner, consisting of a bronze seated figure on a Portland stone plinth, accompanied by stone seats. This feature is an integral part of the overall design that includes the Pavilion at The Fountains.
