Description
The Berners Hotel is a hotel built between 1908 and 1910 by John Slater, who was the surveyor to the Berners Estate. It features a heavy, tall free classical design, constructed from red brick and stone with a slate roof. The building stands four storeys high, with a basement and two tiers of dormers in a mansard roof. The ground floor is faced with channelled stone and includes a large Doric portico that is off-centre, along with arcaded windows that have carved keystones. The upper floors are made of red brick and have flat arched sash windows set within stone architraves. A mutule cornice sits above the third floor, topped by a balustraded parapet. Notable interior features include the hall, dining room, and staircase on the ground floor, which are elaborately decorated in the Second Empire style and feature Baroque plaster ceilings. The hall is particularly distinguished by its marble-lined walls and a marble chimneypiece.
