Description

No. 29 Norfolk Road is a detached villa dating from around 1830, constructed as part of the Portland Estate development in St John's Wood. It is built in a picturesque style combining Cottage Orne and Tudor-Gothic elements, with a half-H shaped floor plan. The villa is two storeys high with a basement, and features three windows wide, with window wings flanking a central entrance bay. The recessed porch has a four-centred arch, approached by steps, with drip moulds and enriched spandrels. It has a weather-coped parapet with ball flower ornament, and a mullioned-transomed casement window above, with a small, openwork bargeboarded gable to the eaves. The wings have mullioned-transomed bay windows on the ground floor, one as a canted oriel with a shaped pent roof and the other flat-fronted. The first floor windows are mullioned-transomed casements with drip moulds. The wing gables are ornamented with openwork bargeboards. A small recessed wing to the left, possibly a former gig house, features a cross-mullioned window above garage doors. The design is similar to other villas on the adjoining Eyre Estate.
