Description

A row of terraced town houses located in Devonshire Place, dating from approximately 1790 to 1800. They were built as part of the Portland Estate development, continuing the character of Upper Wimpole Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. They are three windows wide, and vary in height, rising four storeys with dormered mansards, or five storeys, and are built on basements. The left-hand doorways are wide and elliptical arched, with the exception of the doorway on the right-hand side of number 31. These doorways are fitted with panelled doors, side lights, panelled jambs, moulded doorheads, and patterned fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows in stuccoed reveals, set under flat, gauged arches. A plat band defines the first floor level and where the stucco work ends. The tops of the buildings feature either a parapet with coping or a crowning stucco cornice. Cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern are present on the first floor, and the front is protected by cast iron area railings topped with urn finials.
