Description
The Old Bank of England, located at 194 Fleet Street, is a Grade II listed building designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1886. This striking Italianate corner building features a basement made of rough-hewn grey granite, with Portland stone above. The ground floor showcases a row of engaged Doric columns, while the two upper stories are adorned with Ionic columns. The windows are framed by red granite columns, with those on the ground floor designed in a Venetian style. The building has corner pavilions topped with a bracketed eaves cornice, and a balustrade crowns the main structure. Notable ironwork decorates the entrance in the west pavilion. Additionally, there is a small, lower wing at the rear in Bell Yard.
