Description

TQ 3080 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER STRAND, WC2 73/38 1.5.86 Nos 356 to 359 (consec) G.V. II Symmetrical terrace of houses with shops. c1830-32 as part of the West Strand Improvements planned by Nash, probably executed by William Herbert. Stucco, slate roofs. Graeco-Roman features. 3 storeys, attic storey and dormered mansards. Centre pair of houses each 3 windows wide, Nos 356 and 359 each of one tripartite window wide and treated as terminal pavilions. No 359 with 4-window return to Burleigh Street. Ground floor shop fronts altered mid C20. The centre pair of houses have architraved glazing bar sashes to 1st (full length) and 2nd floors with modillion cornice over 2nd floor and architraved sashes to attic storey which is finished off with cornice and blocking course. The terminal pavilions have architraved tripartite windows with stucco dividers, those on 1st floor pedimented. The modillion main cornice and attic cornice are broken forward over No 359 and returned but No 356 has additional feature of giant Corinthian pilaster order framing 1st and 2nd floors and supporting entablature. Similar details to return front of No 359 but with the 1st and 2nd floor windows of corner pavilion set in through-storey panel. John Nash; John Summerson. Georgian London; John Summerson.
