Description
No. 14 Essex Street is a terrace house built around 1676-1682 as part of the Barbon development. The front was restored in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red brick and has a slate roof, standing three storeys tall with a basement and three windows across its façade. The doorway is located to the left and features a wooden doorcase supported by Doric columns and topped with a pediment. The windows have flush framed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged arches with stone keys. There are stone plat bands on the first and second floors, and a moulded brick cornice below the parapet, which has coping. The property is enclosed by wrought iron area railings with urn finials. Inside, there is a well-preserved interior that includes a panelled passage hall, an archway leading to a panelled staircase with a moulded closed string, turned and twisted balusters, square newels, and bolection panelling in the first-floor rooms.
