Description
These are a group of terraced town houses located at 14 to 17 Devonshire Place, built around 1790 to 1800 as part of the Portland Estate development, extending from Upper Wimpole Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick with rusticated or channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. They are five stories high, with three windows on each front. The doorways are wide and elliptically arched, situated to the right. They feature panelled doors, side lights, and panelled jambs, although No. 14 has pilaster jambs and no sidelights. The doorheads are fluted or moulded, topped with fanlights. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows within stucco reveals and flat gauged arches. A plat band marks the end of the stucco work at the first floor level. The houses have parapets with copings, and a string course and crowning cornice on Nos. 15 and 16. Early to mid-19th century cast and wrought iron patterned balconies run continuously at the first floor level. Area railings with urn finials are intact at No. 16; the remaining houses have railings with tasselled spike finials.
