Description
The Welsh Baptist Chapel is a main London Welsh Baptist chapel built in 1889 by Owen Lewis. It features red brick construction with extensive stone dressings and a slate roof, showcasing an eclectic Classical facade. The building is two storeys high, with the most prominent feature being a two-storey, three-bay full-width Corinthian colonnade portico that screens the front. A central staircase leads up to a landing with an elaborately framed doorway, while balustraded stairs on each side, above a semi-basement, provide access to the upper gallery entrances.
At the first floor level within the portico, there are six semicircular arched windows and two pairs of segmental hooded windows above. The attic includes a stone-framed and pedimented dormer that is taller and wider in the center. The central bay of the portico slightly projects forward and features a date panel set in a scrolled design above an open segmental pediment. The frieze of the portico entablature is inscribed with the words "CAPEL BEDYDDWYR CYMREIG."
