Description

Nos. 14 to 16 Cockspur Street is a pair of headquarters offices built between 1906 and 1908 by A.T. Bolton for the Hamburg-America Shipping Line. The building features a Portland stone facade and a slate roof, designed in a Free Style classicism. It stands four storeys tall, with an attic storey and a dormered mansard, displaying four wide window bays.

The ground floor has a shipping-hall front created around 1920, featuring a granite frame with display windows on either side of a central doorway. This doorway is flanked by columns that support bronze figures of Britannia and Asia, sculpted by E.G. Gillock in 1920. The first floor is marked by rusticated piers and large mullioned-transomed leaded casements. The second and third floors feature shallow oriel windows flanked by paired Ionic columns in antis, extending through two storeys and supporting a deep modillion corniced entablature. The attic storey includes three-light casements set between panelled piers and has an ornate aedicule feature that breaks the skyline on the right side.

Inside, the shipping hall is adorned with mahogany panelling inlaid with mother of pearl, and features Corinthian columns with gilded capitals at the centre. The ceiling includes painted panels added in 1920 by Lieutenant Geoffrey Allfree of the Royal Naval College. Behind the hall is the unaltered manager's office, which retains a black and gold chandelier from around 1920.
