Description

Nos. 78 to 90, Alderney Street form a terrace of houses dating to around 1845. The buildings are constructed of brick with stucco dressings and channelling to the ground floor. They have slated attic mansards on Nos. 78 and 84. Each house is two windows wide and has three storeys and a basement.

The terrace features slightly projecting porches with square piers to the ground floor, each with a panelled door. Ground floor windows are round-headed, set in semicircular reveals. A continuous balustraded balcony originally ran across the first floor, though it has been removed from No. 78. The upper floor windows are square-headed and architraved above the ground floor, with a mix of sash windows, some with margin glazing and some with plate glass. The end houses project slightly and have rusticated quoins. A console cornice and a parapet top the facade, with cast iron area railings at street level. The terrace represents a well-preserved example of its type.
