Description

No. 9 Norfolk Road is a narrowly detached villa, dating from approximately 1830 to 1840, and built as part of the Portland Estate development in St John’s Wood. It is of Grecian style and two storeys, with a basement. The building is constructed of stucco, with a slate roof. Originally three windows wide, it features a former gig-house wing to the right. The doorway on the left is accessed by steps with a flat architrave and consoled cornice. The ground floor has a tripartite sash window within an architrave with a cornice supported by consoles, alongside architraved sashes on the first floor. A plat band runs above the basement level. The exterior features Doric quoin pilasters that extend to a frieze and crowning cornice, topped with a blocking course that has a shaped central block. A geometric, palmette pattern cast iron balcony is located on the ground floor. It resembles similar villas found on the adjoining Eyre Estate.
