Description
Nos 126 to 158 on Buckingham Palace Road are a row of large houses built in the late 19th century, designed by J.J. Stevenson in the Queen Anne style. The houses are constructed of red brick with some stone dressings and feature pitched slate roofs that extend to a parapet. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a consistent layout of three bays, although the designs vary within this basic pattern.
Gables are present on Nos 126, 128, 132, 136, 138, 142, 144, 150, 156, and 158, while canted bays rise through the ground and first floors on Nos 126, 128, 132, 136, 138, 146, 148, 156, and 158. The entrances are accessed by steps and are framed by jolting porches or recessed behind square, round, or segmental-headed doorways. The first floor features balustraded balconies, and the windows are mainly square-headed, sashed with glazing bars, and have almost flush frames. A cornice runs above the second floor, topped by a parapet and dormers on the roof. Slab chimneys and decorative carving add to the architectural detail, while wrought iron area railings display an ambitious design.
