Description

This is a long terrace of houses, numbered 1 to 29, with shops at numbers 1 and 3. It dates from around 1820 and was built as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed from stock brick with a stuccoed ground floor; number 17 is entirely stuccoed. They have concealed slate roofs. The buildings are four storeys high with a basement. Most fronts are two windows wide, although number 17 has three windows, and number 29 has one window, and a three-window wide return with a full-height bow front. Semicircular arched doorways are present on the left side up to number 16, on the right side up to numbers 26 and 27, and again on the left. These doorways have panelled doors, moulded or pilastered jambs, and fanlights. The shop fronts at numbers 1 and 3 are plain. The windows are recessed sashes; most have glazing bars, and some have stucco architraves and cornices, while others are under flat gauged arches to the upper floors. A plat band runs above the ground floor. Coped parapets top the buildings. Cast iron geometric balconies are present on the first floor of all but number 29. Number 17 features a wrought iron trellis verandah with a tent roof. Cast iron spearhead area railings enclose the front. The South American revolutionary leader, Jose de San Martin "El Liberador", once resided at number 23, as marked by a Greater London Council plaque.
