Description

This slide structure is part of a children's playground within the Brunel Estate, designed by Michael Brown in 1970 and constructed between 1973 and 1974 for the City of Westminster. The overall estate landscape was designed by Michael Brown, with housing designed in 1965 and built between 1970 and 1974.

The structure is built of multi-red engineering brick, with all angles mitred. The slide itself is steel. Later steel bow-top railings have replaced the original open tubular handrails. The structure occupies an irregularly shaped site on a slope that rises towards the northwest, where the top of the slide is located. It consists of a series of brick slopes and blocks rising to a summit, creating a varied climbing area. The slide is set into a steep, curving slope and descends around the southeastern side of the structure, ending in a sunken area to the southeast, now with cushioned surfacing. Slopes enclose this lower area, with a staircase on the east side providing access. Originally, strategically placed projecting bricks served as footholds, with metal hand-hold posts above, but these have been removed and the holes filled with matching bricks. Staircases on the east and west sides provide access to the top of the slide. The western staircase, accessed from a raised terrace, has a low wall of dark brown brick, similar to that used elsewhere on the estate, protecting its eastern side. This includes three steps and a small paved area to the east of the slide.
