Description

Harrow Road Police Station is a police station dating from 1911-12, designed by John Dixon Butler, who was architect and surveyor to the Metropolitan Police. Constructed in red brick with stone dressings and quoins, the building has tiled, gabled mansard roofs. It follows a courtyard plan and has nine windows. The building is three storeys high, with an attic and a semi-basement.

The main entrance is located to the right, in the penultimate bay, and features a stone doorcase with a broken pediment supported on elongated, swelling brackets; an architrave doorway is fitted with keystones. The outer and central bays are pedimented, with stone, canted bays rising from the semi-basement to the first floor. Ground-floor and bay windows are casements with glazing bars to the top panels, with stone architraves to the ground floor. First and second-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars and central modillions; the first-floor window heads are gauged brick with keystones. An entablature with a projecting modillion cornice extends to the gables, forming pediments; the central gable features Venetian-type windows. A stone balustrade fronts the mansard roof, incorporating dormers and linking the gables. Cast iron railings are attached to the area, with a lamp standard at the base of the steps, featuring a crenelated lantern with blue glass inscribed "Police" in white and surmounted by a crown.

The interior includes offices and living accommodation, with a cell block located to the rear of the courtyard. This is a fine example of a "first class town station."
