Description

The National Liberal Club is a club and flats block located at Whitehall Court in the City of Westminster, built between 1884 and 1887 by architect Alfred Waterhouse. Constructed from Portland stone with slate roofs, the building is closely related in style to the main lines of Whitehall Court but features more Flemish Renaissance details and a late Gothic "belfry" tower at the northeast corner. It stands five to six storeys high with gabled pavilions and a dormered mansard roof.

The design includes tripartite window groups that separate the gabled pavilions, with one facing Whitehall Court, one angled at the corner, and two facing Whitehall Place, culminating in the tower. The front facing Embankment Gardens features similar gabled pavilions and a terrace that overlooks the gardens. The upper floors of the pavilions have pilaster, mullion, and transom windows set in loggias, along with three-storey canted bays. The building is adorned with enriched string courses, stone balconies, a shaped pediment gable flanked by finials, and tall stone chimney stacks.

The polygonal "belfry" corner tower is richly decorated in Gothic style, featuring tracery on its lofty windows and rising a full storey above the roofline, topped with a conical spire. An ornately balustraded stone terrace is situated above the gardens. Inside, the interiors are lavishly finished by Waterhouse with glazed, ornately patterned terracotta tiling, including the columns. The principal staircase, made of marble and rising in an unsupported oval sweep through three storeys, was added later in 1950-51 by Clyde Young and Engle. The National Liberal Club contributes significantly to the distinctive roofscape of Whitehall.
