Description

No. 14 Buckingham Street is a large end-of-terrace town house built around 1679-1680. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1684 and again in 1791-1792, originally part of Barbon's development of the York House estate. The house is constructed of brown brick with a concealed roof and has four storeys plus a basement. It features four windows across the front (with the left-hand bay being blind) and a long ten-window return towards the river, which includes a slightly recessed four-window central range.

The doorway is located to the right and has a panelled door with a fanlight, set within a stucco surround that includes engaged Doric columns and an entablature with a bracketed mutule cornice. The windows are fitted with recessed glazing bar sashes beneath flat gauged arches. There is a band course above the basement on the return side, and both frontages are topped with plain parapet copings. The windows in the slightly advanced "wings" of the return are all protected by wrought iron guards, and there are cast iron area railings.

Inside, the house features plain late 18th century and early 19th century detailing, including a stone geometrical staircase with a semicircular plan and plain iron balustrading. A plaque from the London County Council commemorates that Samuel Pepys lived in the 1684 house from 1688 to 1701, followed by Robert Harley, who later became the Earl of Oxford, until his dismissal from office in 1714. In the 19th century, the present house, which was let as chambers and offered riverside views, was popular among artists such as Prince Hoare, William Etty, and Clarkson Stanfield.
