Description

This is a terrace of houses located on the west side of St George’s Square, Westminster. The main portion of the terrace dates to the mid-19th century, although numbers 4 to 6 were rebuilt around 1957 using a facsimile design. The buildings are constructed of stucco, with slate mansards. They extend over four storeys and include a basement. Most of the houses are two windows wide, with numbers 4 to 6 being five windows wide. Numbers 2 and 20 to 22 are set forward slightly and feature rusticated quoins. The ground floor is characterised by channelling. Each house has a projecting Ionic porch and a panelled door. A balustraded balcony is present on the first floor. The windows are square-headed, with architraves above the ground floor. First-floor windows have segmental pediments, whereas the projecting houses have triangular pediments. There are cornices above the second-floor windows, culminating in a console cornice and a surrounding parapet. The windows are primarily sash windows with margin glazing, with first-floor French casements; numbers 4 to 6 have metal framed windows. Cast iron area railings are a further feature. Number 2 has a bowed end that closes the view from Belgrave Road. The terrace is an integral part of the overall layout of St George’s Square.
