Description
The Old Rising Sun Public House is a corner public house built in 1866, as indicated by the date on the building. It features pale gault brick with stucco dressings and a stuccoed corner, topped with a slate roof. The architectural style is Italianate classical, and the building stands four storeys tall.
The facade facing High Street has five windows, one of which is blind, while the return to Paddington Street also has five windows. The ground floor is arcaded, with an entrance that is splayed across the corner. The arches are supported by Corinthian pilasters and feature enriched piercedwork spandrels, all beneath an entablature fascia with a modillion cornice. The bar doors are panelled and glazed, with panelled risers leading to the bar windows.
The upper floors have recessed sash windows, with the first-floor windows adorned with pediments on triglyph brackets. Similar brackets support cornices over the second-floor sashes. A sill band marks the third floor, which is topped with a prominent crowning modillion cornice and a blocking course. The stuccoed quadrant corner includes a name panel with the date at the third-floor level.
