Description

This is a terrace of six houses, numbers 2 to 22, located on the north-west side of Norfolk Square in London. The terrace likely dates to the 1840s. It is constructed of brick with a stucco finish, with the ground floor channelled to resemble ashlar masonry. The roof is concealed behind a parapet. The terrace is four storeys high with a basement, and each house has two bays. The final six bays to the south project slightly and have attic windows, mirroring the design of the houses on the opposite side of the square. This suggests an original intention to create a symmetrical appearance, which was altered by the construction of taller terraces to the north. Channelled angle pilasters mark the projecting bays. The entrances are emphasised with pilasters. The windows are tripartite sashes set in decorative, vermiculated surrounds with key blocks. An iron balcony is situated on the first floor. Upper floors feature sashes in architraves, with some having pediments supported on consoles. The projecting bays have segmental pediments. A sill band runs across the second floor. The third-floor sashes are set within eared architraves. There is a modillioned cornice below the parapet. The outer six bays have an attic with sashes and a coping along the top. Iron railings flank the steps leading to the entrances.
