Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II listed Gothic building designed by E W Mountford, completed in 1897 with additional eastern parts added in 1905. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has a tiled roof. The west end resembles a Tudor gatehouse, featuring octagonal stone-banded towers on either side of the gable-end of the nave. This gable is pierced by a small pointed arch door surround, above which is a large west window with panel tracery. The apex of the gable is illuminated by a small window of panel tracery. Each tower has a top stage that forms a traceried and glazed lantern, topped with a shallow octagonal cap and spirelet. Beyond the towers, the end walls of the aisles are visible, each adorned with a 2-lancet window. The clerestory windows on the north and south elevations consist of triplets of cusped lancets beneath flat heads. At the east end, stepped buttresses support the gable-end, flanking the panel traceried east window, while the end walls of the aisles extend similarly to those at the west end. A freestanding north tower was intended to complete the design.
