Description

This factory, located on Standen Road, was built in 1903-4 and designed by Charles E Dawson and W T Walker. It is constructed of white and green glazed brick with stone dressings, and has a tiled roof. The building is two storeys high and ten bays wide, with the second and ninth bays projecting slightly and each topped with a dome. Elaborate iron finials are present. Entrances are located at the base of each bay, with a prominent shell hood over the entrance to the left. Segmental hooded entrances mark the outer bays. The ground-floor windows are round-headed, some now blocked, while the upper-floor windows are square-headed. A mullioned and transomed canted bay window is visible on the upper storey of the left bay. There is a frieze below the eaves to the centre six bays, which originally displayed the words "Frame Food." A further frieze is located between the storeys, retaining faience paterae, and similar paterae are also found on the upper stage of the towers. This building represents a rare example of a factory designed in the Arts and Crafts style.
