Description
The Church of St Barnabas, located in Lavender Gardens, was built in 1879 by W Bassett Smith. This church is designed in the Decorated Gothic style and features a nave and aisles, with a pinnacled tower at the west end of the south aisle. It is constructed from ragstone with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs adorned with cresting tiles. Inside, the church is finished in yellow brick with bands of red. A notable interior feature is the stone and alabaster reredos created by Thomas Rudge of Clapham Common. Additionally, there is a two-light window by Clayton and Bell dedicated to the memory of the architect. The church serves as an important visual landmark at the north-west corner of Clapham Common.
