Description

The Polish Roman Catholic Church of St John the Evangelist was founded in 1858 and designed by Charles Lee. Originally named St John the Evangelist, it is constructed from Kentish rag with ashlar dressings, employing elements of the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a slate roof. The asymmetrical design is dominated by a tall, angle-buttressed north-west tower topped with a stone broach spire pierced by lucarnes.

Inside, the church features octagonal piers supporting four-bay arcades to the nave, and an open timber truss roof. It includes two-light clerestory windows, a chancel arch, and an open timber chancel roof. The east window is composed of lancets and wheel tracery. Further windows are three-light, located to the west and in the transept. A gabled, octagonal baptistery is situated to the north-east.
