Description

The Shaftesbury Park Estate, located on Grayshott Road in SW1, comprises a pair of terraces dated 1874 and designed by Robert Austin. The terraces culminate in houses featuring towers, presenting a formal appearance as an exit from the estate to the north, with blind return elevations to the south.

The towered houses are three storeys high and constructed of yellow stock brick with stone, red, and black brick dressings. A projecting shopfront on the ground floor is framed by Doric-style piers with moulded corbel blocks. Above the shopfront is an octagonal tower with three front facets, each pierced by sash windows at first and second floor levels. Stone moulded lintels are found above the first-floor windows, while blind Gothic-arch heads decorate the second floor. The building is topped by a stepped block cornice and an octagonal spire featuring patterned bands of slate. Each facet of the spire has a stone trefoil gablet with a flower finial, except the south facet, which has a corbelled stack with a cogged cornice.

Attached to the main terraces are further terraces of five houses each, standing two storeys high and two windows wide. These are constructed of yellow stock brick with dressings matching the towered houses. Corbelled, round-arched porches are set under single gables at numbers 36, 33, 49, and 51. The remaining houses (40, 42, 53, and 55) have Gothic-arch door surrounds, with numbers 40 and 42, and 53 and 55 being coupled. The terraces are finished with block cornices and slate roofs.
