Description

The Virginia Quay Settlers Monument is a free-standing stone and bronze structure built in 1951. It incorporates a bronze plaque from 1928 and features later sculptural additions from 1999 by Wendy Taylor CBE. The monument commemorates the departure of settlers for Jamestown, Virginia, in the USA.

Constructed from bronze, rough-hewn granite, and polished granite, the monument is located on the north bank of the River Thames, facing south. At its top is a larger-than-life representation of an astrolabe made of bronze, which sits atop a rough-hewn granite base that resembles a rocky promontory. The base also supports the 1928 bronze plaque, which is offset to the west. The plaque features embossed lettering that details the historical significance of the site, stating that on December 19, 1606, the "Susan Constant," "Godspeed," and "Discovery" set sail with 105 adventurers, ultimately landing at Cape Henry, Virginia, in April 1607, and founding the first permanent English colony in America.

The rectangular base of the monument is faced in polished granite and features inscriptions on the north and south faces. These inscriptions note that the Virginia Settlers Memorial Tablet was unveiled in 1928 on the wall of Brunswick House, which formerly stood about 100 yards to the west of the current location. It also mentions that in 1999, Barratt Homes Limited reinstated the monument and commissioned the mariners astrolabe by Wendy Taylor CBE.
