Description
Blackwall Pier and the entrance lock to the former East India Dock Basin date from around 1803, with later enlargements. This structure serves as the entrance lock to the East India Dock Basin, designed by Rennie and Walker. It features brick facing with ashlar coping along the quays, and is partly protected by timber fending. The lock has been backfilled up to the later 19th-century iron plated lock gates. Beyond these gates, the quay walls display pairs of grooves cut into the ashlar blocks, likely intended for an earlier set of gates. The quays and pier still include their original bollards and capstans.
