Description
The arch at Bromley-by-Bow Health Centre is a Grade II listed structure originally from Northumberland House. It was likely built by Daniel Garrett between 1748 and 1750, based on a design by William Kent. The arch was relocated to Bromley-by-Bow around 1875 and moved to its current position in 1997.
This semi-circular Palladian arch is made from rusticated, heavily vermiculated limestone. It features rusticated stone blocks and voussoirs, with plain stone plinths that slightly project from the rusticated piers. The arch springs from a projecting moulded impost band and rises to a dropped keystone adorned with a carved grotesque head. Above the arch, a moulded string course supports a parapet with a symmetrical balustrade and moulded cornice, which were restored to follow the original pattern when the arch was moved in 1997.
The arch is integrated into the boundary wall of the Bromley-by-Bow Health Centre, which is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond. After the arch's relocation, metal gates were added, featuring the lettering 'BROMLEY BY BOW HEALTH CENTRE'. Inside the south pier, three stone plaques detail the history of the arch, the opening of the Health Centre in 1997, and the provenance of a stone sculpture located in the courtyard of the Health Centre.
