Description

Gable Cottages, located on Sudrey Street in Southwark, were built in 1889 by Elijah Hoole for the Reverend T. Bastow. This group of 16 cottages is designed in the Arts and Crafts Tudor style and features red brick construction with half-timbering, roughcast, and some tile hanging on the upper floors. The cottages have pitched tiled roofs of varying heights, with sprocketed eaves and tall chimneys, arranged around three sides of a square.

The irregular frontages include many gable ends and some angled designs, with each cottage standing two storeys high and consisting of one bay. The plain plank doors are topped with rectangular overlights, and the first floors are slightly jettied, predominantly half-timbered with proud, patterned roughcast filling, with one or two cottages adorned with fishscale tiles. The centre of the group features a canted bay at the first-floor level. The windows are a mix of two-, three-, and four-light sashes.

Although the interior was not inspected, the cottages are complemented by cast-iron garden railings with urn finials placed at intervals. This development reflects the pioneering ideas of Octavia Hill for working-class housing.
