Description

The Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel is a chapel built between 1872 and 1873. It is constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings and has a slate roof. The chapel features a rectangular nave with a U-shaped gallery supported by thin iron columns.

The exterior facing Southwark Bridge Road is divided into four bays by giant pilasters that support a prominent cornice with a central pediment and five urns on the skyline. Above the central pair of doors, one designated for women and the other for men, there is a triple-arched window topped with a moulded arch and keystone. The entrance is flanked by railings with four gates leading to the central doors and additional doors at the basement level. An iron bracket for a hanging light is located in the spandrel between the central doors.

Inside, the chapel has a flat roof divided into compartments with plaster and wood ornamentation, featuring ventilating grates in the corners. The gallery fronts are made of open metalwork. The east end retains its ritual fittings under a round-arched recess with a memorial inscription. Both levels have plain wooden pews and dadoes, and the wall separating male and female worshippers is also intact. The building features original pale blue, green, and white rolled Cathedral glass. At the rear, there is a minister's room with the original fireplace and cupboards, while the hall retains its encaustic tiling. This chapel is a remarkably well-preserved example of a Welsh Chapel of the Valleys, both inside and out.
