Description

The Duke of York Public House is a late 19th-century public house located at 47 Borough Road in Southwark. It features a wedge-shaped plan with a chamfered corner and is designed in the Queen Anne style. The building is constructed from red and stock brick, with a glazed brick plinth and stucco dressings, topped by a tiled roof.

It stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range, with a segmental bay on the first floor to the right. There is a four-window range on the return, which also includes a similar bay in the third range. An ornamental plaque is located on the first floor at the corner, with a bay above it on the second floor that is an oriel. The upper floors have segmental-arched windows, except in the bays and oriel. There are storey and sill bands for the second-floor windows, and each elevation features a pedimented dormer.

The ground floor showcases an authentic design with fluted pilasters and elaborately modelled panels that include jester's masks. There is a well-detailed late 20th-century door and some stained glass present on the ground floor. The interior is unusually complete, featuring an authentic cornice and slender iron columns. This well-designed building effectively utilizes its corner site.
