Description

The Church of St Peter is a church built between 1873 and 1875, with the tower completed in 1885, designed by Charles Barry Jnr. It has been recently restored. The church is constructed from Kentish ragstone with ashlar dressings and features steeply pitched slated roofs, with a lavish polychrome interior. The architectural style is Geometric Gothic.

The church has a plan that includes a six-bay nave, aisles with lean-to roofs, and an apsed chancel, with the tower located to the northeast. The exterior features a gabled entrance at the west end of the north elevation. The windows are primarily cusped lancets, arranged in triplets in the aisles and as singles in the apse, with trefoils above, the central one being larger. There are pairs of leaded windows in the clerestory and a large traceried west window with stained glass dating from around 1891. The tall buttressed tower has a slender slated broach spire, with blind arcading above the gabled entrance on the north face and groups of three tall louvred bell openings on each face beneath the spire.

Inside, the church features marble columns in the nave arcades, coloured brickwork, and terracotta diapering. The open timber roof includes some painted decoration, particularly in the chancel. The choir vestry and organ chamber, located to the right of the chancel, have been converted into a private chapel, with the organ relocated to the west end. The pews have been recently dismantled, resulting in an open-plan interior. The floor has been rebuilt in concrete, with steps leading up from the lower nave to the aisles. Victorian fittings include metal light brackets, a pulpit, a font, and a reredos.
