Description
The monument to Prince Lee Boo is a chest tomb with a related headstone, located approximately 10 meters west of the west tower of the Church of St Mary. It was erected in 1784 by the Honourable East India Company in memory of Prince Lee Boo from the Pelew Islands. The tomb is made of yellow brick and features a rectangular shape with a scalloped headstone made of Portland stone at one end, along with an inscribed Portland stone ledger. The monument commemorates Prince Lee Boo, whose father had shown kindness to the shipwrecked crew of the East Indiaman Antelope in 1738. Lee Boo returned to London with Captain Wilson of the Antelope, who is also commemorated on the headstone, and he died of smallpox. The inscription on the monument concludes with the poignant words, "Stop, reader, stop, let Nature shed a tear / A prince of mine, Lee Boo, lies buried here."
