Description
The Connaught Tavern is a late 19th-century public house designed by Vigers and Wagstaffe, reflecting a style reminiscent of Norman Shaw. It is constructed of red brick with a tiled roof and tile-hung gables. The building rises four storeys and features a three-window range. The central bay is slightly set forward, breaking the roofline to create a Dutch gable. There are canted bay windows on the first and second floors, which rise from a timber balustraded gallery that extends over the ground-floor wing.
The return elevation has twin tile-hung gables with a single canted bay window on the first floor. The windows throughout the building are segmental-headed sash and casement types, each with elaborate brick sills. An egg and dart brick eaves cornice adorns the main elevation, along with a brick string course at the first-floor level. A brick panel featuring a ship relief is present on the return elevation, and the entrance door is topped with a shell hood. The building also has massive ribbed chimney stacks and a contemporary two-storey rear extension that matches the original style.
