Description
Warehouse W is a warehouse dating from approximately 1860 to 1865, built as an early structure within the Royal Victoria Dock. The building is constructed from yellow stock brick with a slate roof. It is four storeys high, featuring an eleven-bay facade with a symmetrical rhythm of window bays and loopholes. The central bay contains three segment-headed loopholes with timber doors and an iron hoist. Ground, first, and second floor openings are contained within shallow round-arched recesses, with segmental-headed windows subdivided by iron glazing bars. Fourth-floor openings are formed as blind recesses. The gabled end elevations are blank, with stepped brick decoration to the parapet.
The internal construction is consistent across all four storeys, featuring timber floors supported by three cast-iron columns running the depth of the building. The columns have flanged caps supporting spreader plates and full-span coupled beams. A timber straight-flight open staircase is located in the north-west corner of the building. The roof is supported by queen post trusses that are diagonally braced.
