Description

The Silvertown War Memorial is a war memorial built around 1920, made of limestone. It features a square section entactic pier composed of four stones, standing on a circular plinth. The base has an ogee section, and the top displays a laurel wreath on each face, each set in a segmental-headed field above a reeded base.

The inscriptions on the memorial include the following: on the east face, it honors the memory of the men from the works who fell in the Great War from 1914 to 1919, listing seven names. The north face is blank. The west face commemorates those who died while serving their country by making TNT, specifically referencing the explosion in the works on January 19th, 1917, with 18 names listed. The south face remembers those who fell in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, with seven names engraved. Notably, the west face commemorates the 73 individuals killed in the Silvertown TNT factory explosion of 1917, which was caused by a fire that reached the explosives store.

The memorial was relocated to its current site in 2016.
